Fishing Shuswap Lake

Experience World Class Fishing Shuswap Lake, BC

Shuswap Lake, situated in the serene landscapes of British Columbia, is a favorite spot for anglers seeking relaxation and a good catch. With its clear waters and diverse fish population, it’s an ideal destination for fishing enthusiasts of all levels.

Variety of Fish: Shuswap Lake is home to a variety of fish species, including large rainbows and lake trout. These prized catches often dwell in the deeper, cooler parts of the lake. To catch them, anglers often rely on techniques like using downriggers to reach the desired depths effectively.

Sockeye Salmon Season: During the sockeye salmon returns, which occurs every fall, you will likely find anglers fishing in and around river and creek mouths, or in the rivers themselves, where open. Fly fishing with egg patterns in the fall or fry and smolt patterns in the spring is particularly effectives during these respective times.

Key Tips for Fishing Shuswap Lake: For those targeting rainbow and lake trout, trolling with spoons, or large streamers while using downriggers can be very effective. Our favorite spoons are the Kitchen Sink, Nickel/Neon Blue H&H, and the Cop Car. Large streamers and buck tails can also be quite effective, especially in the spring when juvenile salmon are out-migrating from the lake, which large rainbows and lake trout key in on. Depth sounders / fish finders are particularly helpful for finding where the juvenile salmon schools are. If you find those schools, you will also often spot the large trout feeding on them on the depth sounder as well! When fishing for trout in smaller surrounding lakes, it’s important to match the hatch and adapt to changing conditions to maximize success. Trolling wedding bands is of course an old faithful, and for the fly fishers, my recommended go-to for a new lake would be a olive wooly bugger with crystal flash. If looking to venture further from Shuswap Lake, lakes in and around the Kamloops area offer world class rainbow trout fly fishing, with some of the best and fun fishing occurring in the spring (during the chironamid hatches).

Seasonal Fishing: Each season offers its own fishing delights at Shuswap Lake. In spring, anglers can target hungry trout near the surface as the water warms up. Summer invites recreational fishing with warm weather and longer days. And in fall, the annual sockeye salmon run draws anglers to witness this natural spectacle.

Environmental Stewardship: Anglers should practice responsible fishing to preserve Shuswap Lake’s ecosystem. This includes adhering to catch limits, handling and releasing fish properly, and minimizing impact on habitats. Make sure you check the local fishing regulations and grab a licence before you head out!
